Energy Drinks

I made mention in an earlier post that I had found a more natural form of energy drink as apposed to other energy drinks on the market such as, Red Bull, Mother, Rockstar, and Monster just to name a few of the more popular drinks.

Most of these drinks are loaded with refined sugars and caffeine and/or other synthetic ingredients to give you a quick high only to crash back down a little while later. The video below is a gives you a good idea as to how much sugar you can expect to find in these cans of drink.

As I mentioned at the start of this post I have found a more natural form of energy drink that does not use the sugar that is found in the other drinks. It does use caffeine but not at unsafe levels, it is made up primarily of fruit juice concentrates including Acai, Grape, Plum, Pear, Plum, Kiwi, and Apricot.

When I take it I do not get and energy kick as such but I do find that I become more awake and alert and I find that very beneficial after a big lunch when all I want to do is lay down and go to sleep but know I have to keep working.

You can find out more by visiting this link Natural Energy Drink or you can contact me for further information here Contact Me

5 Year Anniversary

I have some good news that I want to share with everyone. I have reached my five year anniversary, but this is an anniversary with a difference and I happy to announce that I honestly not been sick for 5 years now, have not even looked like getting sick.

I can remember the last time well as I had to catch an early morning train to Sydney one weekend to buy a new car and what made this trip bad was I had a bad case of the flu. As you would already know if you have the flu the last thing you want to do is be up and about traveling and trying to organize things, all I want to do is stay in bed and get some rest.

That was the when I finally decided it was time to take health more seriously and as the old saying goes "I was sick and tired of being sick and tired". It was not uncommon for me to get sick and it was pretty much a yearly event for me to catch the flu.

Getting my health back on track did not take dramatic change in my lifestyle but the effects speak for themselves. Every now and then I still have the occasional bit of junk food or a night on the town so there is no need to go to the extremes when your after change in your own life.

I credit my turn around in health to a number of factors. First is supplementing my diet with quality nutritional supplements, some people think they are a waste of time and money but through my experience I have to say they are worth there weight in gold. Second is to eat as much fresh produce as possible (preferably organic if possible) and limit consumption of processed foods. Thirdly keeping active I found was important so doing exercise regularly during the week and getting some good exposure to sunlight also helps.

These are all things you've probably heard about before and I believe for a good reason, because it works. 5 years without being sick, its definitely worked for me. ***FACEBOOK-COMMENT***

Driving Foods

Last week I decided it was time for a break, so I packed my bags and geared up to for a long road trip that would stretch for more than 2200kms one way. This was a trip I had done more than once so I knew that the trip was going to be be long and boring, and to go along with that is the feeling of tiredness from all those hours behind the wheel.

Now when I get in a car to drive, it usually takes me about 5 minutes before I start feeling drowsy and that's not a good sign when I was planing to do around 12 hours or more per day to reach my destination.

I was wondering what types of food I should pack that would give me the energy I needed to stay awake and alert. Immediately I thought about foods high in carbohydrates as they are known to be energy foods, however after talking with my mother about the task at hand she told me about packing foods that are higher in proteins as they will not leave you with that drowsy feeling.

With that thought in mind I up some tubs of chicken salad to take with me as well as some fruit and a thermos full of home made ice tea. The salads were made up of grated carrot, beetroot, and broccoli with chicken, avocado and a salad dressing made up of olive oil, apple cider vinegar, maple syrup, onion powder and garlic powder. I also had a natural energy drink that I will talk about in a later post.

On reflection of this trip and previous trips I would have to agree that eating foods higher in proteins seem to keep you more alert for longer and feelings of tiredness do not strike until hours into the trip.

If you are planing a long road trip give the high protein foods a run and see if you get the same benefits as I did, its worth a shot.

If you would like, tell me you thoughts below ***FACEBOOK-COMMENT***

Stepping Up The Exercise

Its been a while since I last blogged so I thought I would let you in with what's captured my attention the last month or so. I have been bitten by the workout bug. I thought it was time to really get into shape, bring back the six pack abs.

Now, I've always been the slim type of build and never had any real problems with weight but over the past couple of years I have gained a little extra padding around my stomach.

So the last week I stepped up the exercise regime. I started with interval training Monday morning followed by a push up and chin up routine in the afternoon, an 8km cross country race Wednesday, and to finish the week off, on Friday afternoon my friend thought it would be a good idea to attempt 600 push ups and 100 chin ups in one hour.

I can tell you that I failed that challenge miserably. I could only pump out 300 push ups and 60 chin ups. It took a maximum effort and I am definitely feeling the effects in my chest, lats, and shoulders today.

In addition to this exercise I am going to be a bit more stringent with what I eat as well.

Next week I am planning on dusting off the kettle bells and skipping rope and doing a circuit in the garage.

If anyone has any good workout ideas or meal idea's for getting shredded let me know in the comment section below and Ill give them a try.

It really makes you realize that the onus is on you alone to look after yourself. You will find that a lot of the major food companies as well as the government really do not have your best interests in mind. Its all about the money.

"Me Time"

I touched a bit on this theme on my last post and I thought it was worthy of a repeat for this post because I found it to help me out quite a bit in the last week or so.

When was the last time you felt you were in a big Rut and wondered why am I here and how am I going to get out of this one. When your in one of these Ruts you have no energy, no drive, and no doubt find it hard to communicate or even keep on good terms with some people who seem to do anything and everything to rub you up the wrong way.

And this is exactly the way I was feeling the last couple of weeks. I thought to myself how am I going to break this cycle because its not really the way I want to live. So, I decided it's time for a bit of "Me Time" again. Time to take a step back, get some fresh air and do something to clear my mind.

I got together with a couple of friends of mine and took off for a bit of an adventure. We drove off to the hills not to far away where there is the clearest flowing creeks you will ever find. The water was at the perfect temperature for swimming and to make things even better there the most awesome rock jump into the creek, it stood about 8 to 10 meters in height, just enough to give you butterflies in the stomach when you leap off.

After a couple of hours there my head was clear and the problems that were annoying me had disappeared, I felt revitalized and ready to attack the new week.

Give it a go next time you get stuck in a Rut. Get away for some "Me Time" and do something for yourself that you know makes you happy and takes your mind off any troubles you have. It might be just the thing you need to break the cycle. It worked for me.

Treat Yourself

Last year was not the the best year I've ever had. It was a year that tested me in many different ways especially on the financial front.

Some issues that started to manifest a couple of years back had to be sorted and I decided to play my part and take on some financial burden to help relieve the pain of others. This in itself was not an overly big concern to me because I wanted to help out. Then out of the blue another issue arose where I had to relieve myself of yet another large sum of money, this time I was not to impressed to see it go.

Anyway the year went on and all of a sudden I found myself worrying more and more about my dwindling bank account then right on que things started to happen where I needed to spend more and more money on this, that and the next thing one of which was my car that just kept on breaking down.

I started to feel pretty down in the dumps with the situation and decided I needed a bit of a pick me up. So what did I do? I went and spent more money and bought myself a new car. It may sound a little crazy but now that I have treated myself to something new and something that I needed I actually feel a lot less stressed about about my financial issues. It has brought back a sence of excitement and pride in my life that I think I was missing for quite some time. And with the excitement and new sence of energy and motivation.

So when ever your feeling a bit flat and you think the world is coming down on you it might just be time for a little "Me Time". Time to treat yourself, you dint have to rush out and by a new car like I did but just to do something especially for yourself can really have a positive effect on the way you view your problems and the world.

Give it a go and see what happens.

Cyclone Yasi

Last week I experienced something completly new to to me, I experienced my first tropical cyclone. It was not your typical cyclone either, this one was building up to be the biggest cyclone in Australian history and was predicted to causes major damage across the far north east coast of Queensland. Fortunatley for me the cyclone deviated its course slightly north and we were spared a direct hit from the eye of the storm. Many others were not so lucky and our hearts go out to those who have to rebuild there lives.

I was able to take some video, some before and some after. The worst of the storm hit at midnight so I was unable to get any clear video of how strong it was.

Listen To Your Body

During the Christmas break I was kept very busy, to start with I decided to drive home to my families property which was well over the 2000km mark each way. After celebrating Christmas I was soon put to work for the next week and a half in the new orchard pruning and suckering the new tree's which required a lot of bending of the back.

After my long and drawn out return trip home in the car I was left with a tightening back that required a bit of stretching to free it up. Now that doesn't seem like the most difficult task's to follow but I tend to get a bit lazy at times and decided not to worry the stretch's.

Now this is where things went pear shaped for me. I decided to do a kettle bell work ( a form of exercise lifting, swinging, and pressing various weighted kettle bells )out without warming up and without doing any stretching. It all started well but just as I was about to finish up my back let go and I ended up flat on the ground in a fair bit of pain.

The next week I was suffering from back spasm's and had very little to no mobility through my back. Had I have listened to my body and not been to lazy to stretch then I think I would not have had the trouble of the last week.

So next time your body tries to tell you something listen up, your body knows best.

A New Year

I know its a touch late but I just have to say it because it has me excited. Happy New Year!!

I hope everyone had a great Christmas with friends and family and also made the most of new years eve whether it was party like there was no tomorrow or just taking the opportunity to wind down and relax. I took the party approach and had a great night on the town with friends.

The best thing about a new year is the opportunity to put the past year behind you and start the new year fresh. 2010 for me was not the best year Ive ever had but I did learn some very valuable lessons that I wont forget in a hurry.

Now that 2011 is upon us its time to set ourselves up for a big year. Forget about the negatives of the past year and focus on what really matters most moving forward. For me I have some big lifestyle goals I want to achieve this year, building on my health and wealth as well as helping others do the same is what is getting me excited.

If there ever was a time to get motivated to make a change in your own life its right now, the year has just begun so set your goals and make them happen. 2011 prepare to be dominated.

Juicing And Clear Skin

Hello again its been a while since my last post about buying my juicer and I'm happy to say I finally did take delivery and I'm very happy to say the least.

Although I haven't been all that adventurous yet with the the variety of juices I have made so far ( partly because I have been waiting for better quality and seasonal fruits to start coming in, but mostly because I have been a touch lazy). I have to say that what I have been juicing has been not only a taste sensation but I have also noticed a little something in my appearance.

Before I started out on my juicing journey I did a lot of research on the benefits of fresh natural juice and somewhere among all these benefits was "clearer skin". The reason that this benefit stuck out for me was that I am a 32 year old male that occasionally gets the odd dose of acne on my face when I eat or drink things with to much sugar content.

Since I have started my juicing regime I have noticed that my skin looks a lot cleaner and more alive or vibrant (if that makes sense), and even when I do have have the occasional splurge on a bit of junk food the acne seems far less if any at all.

Anyway the juice I have been having is apple, lemon, a touch of ginger and sometimes I throw a bit of cayenne pepper on top just to give a bit more of a kick in the cleansing department. I will shoot a video and show you just how easy it is and until you try it you want believe how good it tastes.***FACEBOOK-COMMENT***

Juicing Time

Well I've finally done it, I've ordered a juicer and hopefully take delivery of it tomorrow morning. With juicing now being all the rage I thought it was time to get in on the action. I did a bit of study and bought what I think is the best juicer on the market today, the Hurom Slow Juicer. The company says it preserves more vitamins and antioxidants and has nofrothing or foaming, or any of the separation that occurs with other juicers so you will enjoy fresher, more flavorful and more nutritional juice.

I cant wait to hook into my first juice, it's going to be a natural lemonade/sherbet lemonade made from only two ingredients, Apple and Lemon. It may not sound like the most adventurous juice but I have had it before and the taste is something else, its something you wouldn't expect it will definitely have you coming back for more. It is also said to be very high in vitamins A,B,and C.

Environmental Toxins

I have just read an interesting article from the "Time Magazine" regarding environmental toxins and in particular the dangers of plastics we use in our everyday lives.

One of the main nasty ingredients in these plastic items is the chemical known as "BPA". This chemical has been receiving more and more attention through the media about the dangers it posses to peoples health, especially newborns.

Below is a snippet from the article, you can see the full story here The Perils of Plastic

Failure to Protect
If you want to market a new drug, you need to convince the FDA in multiple tests, over the course of years that it won't cause serious harm. If you want to sell a new pesticide, you need to prove the same thing. The burden of proof is on manufacturers to make the grade, and government regulators are the final judge.

But if you want to market a new chemical for use in a product even one that will come into contact with children or pregnant women it's up to the EPA to prove that it's unsafe, using whatever data are provided by the chemical company, with little power to ask for more. And if it's one of the 62,000 chemicals that were already in use when the TSCA went into effect in 1976 a category that includes BPA chances are it was never really tested by the government at all. "Chemicals are deemed safe until the EPA can prove that they are dangerous," says Richard Wiles, executive director of the nonprofit Environmental Working Group. "It's completely backward."

Another great article I found regarding BPA is The Dangers of BPA

By Allison Biggar

The relationship between unhealthy eating and the development of disease is undeniable. When most people receive a cancer diagnosis their doctors are quick to prescribe drugs and harsh treatments such as radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery. All of these treatments have a harrowing effect on the body opening it up to a whole host of other problems.

Holistic health practitioners, on the other hand, will often recommend detoxification methods such as cleansing to eliminate cancer from the body. Here Allison Biggar interviews European journalist and ovarian cancer survivor Evita Ramparte about how she cured her cancer naturally through a raw vegan diet without chemotherapy, surgery or radiation.
***FACEBOOK-COMMENT***

You've probably already heard about high mercury levels in some types of fish, and even PCB's in some fish too. However, this video goes beyond just mercury and PCBs and shows how your fish that you buy can be tainted with some pretty scary stuff!

And how about the fish they found being raised in sewage! Interesting. And the fungicide they found in some fish that can cause birth defects and cancer...

Now before you let this video freak you out and swear off fish or seafood for good, here are some things to keep in mind in order to make sure you're getting healthier fish and seafood:

1. Most of these problems are always related to farmed fish. Stick to wild fish for the healthiest possible choices.

Besides farmed fish sometimes being tainted with harmful chemicals, farmed fish is many times fed an un-natural diet (fish are not meant to eat soy and corn pellets), and this reduces the nutritional value of the fish, and distorts the omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid ratio, making farmed fish less healthy for you.

2. Even if you stick to wild fish instead of farmed (which will help avoid many of the chemicals mentioned in the video), you can still overdose on mercury if you eat certain types of fish too often... fish that are high on the food chain accumulate the most mercury... so that would be large predatory fish such as tuna, swordfish, shark, grouper, king mackeral, tilefish, striped bass, etc.

By the way, when it comes to canned tuna... white tuna (albacore) has higher levels of mercury than light tuna.

This doesn't mean that you should never eat these fish (after all, I'm a sushi lover myself!)... your body can handle some levels of mercury in fish eaten on occasion (2-3 times per month), and if you're healthy and eat a very clean diet with lots of detoxifying veggies, herbs, spices, and teas, your body can slowly eliminate the low levels of mercury. However, keeping these large predatory fish to 2-3 times per month max is a good idea. Note: pregnant women should consult their doctor for the entire list of fish to avoid during pregnancy.

3. Wild fish that are lower on the food chain can still be very healthy, but will have MUCH lower levels of mercury. This can include wild salmon (one of my favorite meals), pollock, trout, sardines, herring, and many types of shellfish.

Also, keep in mind that fish such as salmon, trout, sardines, and herring are super-rich in healthy fats, including omega-3 fatty acids (great source of DHA and EPA components)

You should find it interesting.

By Leigh Erin Connealy, M.D.

Aspartame, more commonly known as NutraSweet or Equal, is one of the most toxic substances being consumed today. The artificial sweetener, currently used in over 4,000 products worldwide, entertains a sordid past and has been one of the most tested and debated food additives in the history of the FDA.

While the manufacturer maintains that aspartame is not a danger to your health, the scientific studies don't necessarily agree. The FDA has approved the product for mass consumption, in spite of overwhelming evidence that aspartame can have neurotoxic, metabolic, allergenic, fetal and carcinogenic effects.

When you question how such a substance has not been banned, one simply needs to look at the billions of dollars generated by the sale of aspartame each year. In light of the staggering number of dollar signs involved, it's easy to see that the artificial sweetener industry has reached Big Tobacco status. With so much money at stake, the truth suffers almost as much as the health of the consumers, while the shareholders' wealth continues to grow exponentially.

This is probably one of biggest and most important issues when trying to achieve anything we set out to do.

You would have noticed that when you are motivated your energy levels are high, you have a more positive outlook, you are more determined and overall more happy with life.

There is no magic switch to turn on motivation but there are things you can do to try and get you back into the zone, no matter what your goal.

Turn on some music that you know gets you pumped up.

Read books that are inspirational on the topic you are trying to master

Get on the internet and look up motivational video's.

Research leader's in your specific field and find out how they overcame their hurdles.

Talk to others that have been there and done that.

Limit the time you spend with people who have a negative outlook. Listening to people who tell you how hard things are and that you will never succeed tends to dilute your enthusiasm and motivation.

Take action every day, without action you will never know success.

I was watching it tonight and came up with the realization that, if there ever was any doubt to whether lifestyle changes and nutrition could have a positive change on a persons life, then this show should prove to be one of the best testimonials there ever was.

Not only do these people lose massive amounts of weight but they also notice marked improvements in there overall health.

Many of the contestants report to having alleviated many of there health concerns that thought would be with them for life.

They also report to having so much more energy. Energy they can not remember having since they were still children.

If these people who looked so far gone are able to transform their lives in the matter of 3 to 4 months, it makes you wonder what you could achieve if you really wanted change in your life.

Drink lots of water daily

Eat foods that are as fresh and natural as you can find

And exercise every day

The results may take you by suprise

You may have read or heard of a technique used in business known as the K.I.S.S principle, which stands for "Keep It Simple Stupid".

A lot of the time when people try to achieve bigger and better results they tend to steer away from the simple things that matter most, and worry things that are out of there reach or out of the area's in which they can control leading to a lot of stress and very little productivity.

The same can be said about health related issues. A lot of the time when problems pop up regarding health, people can tend to be more worried about finding medicines or medical procedures to fix there problems, when in reality all that may be needed is a change in the foods we eat and the lifestyle's we lead.

Think about it this way. Foods that are in there natural state that have not been altered or processed contain the highest amount of nutrients compared to foods that have been.

Processing foods destroy a lot of the critical enzymes and nutrients needed by the body to be able to digest and absorb them into the cells properly.

If it has been processed or altered limit your intake as much as possible.

Eating foods in there raw and simple form will be far more beneficial.

Its late Sunday morning and time to head into town to do my weekly grocery shopping.

All is going well as I walk up and down the isle's when I suddenly start to notice whats happening with the people around me, more to the point I start to notice a very common trend with the people who are over weight, low on energy, not really switched on and people who seem to be at unease with the world for what ever reason.

The common trend I observed was what they had in there shopping trolley. Nearly every person that fell into the above mentioned groups all seemed to have there shopping trolleys filled up with what could only be described as crap, total rubbish foods like soft drinks, 2 minute noodles, white breads, packets of chips, pastries, ice creams and sweets with very little fruits and vegetables.

I also noticed that the people who looked more alive, tuned in and generally in better shape had far less processed foods and much more fruit and veg than the first group.

Next time your at the super market doing your weekly shop just have a look around and see if you don't notice the same trend.

Morale of the story? A lot of people don't seem to realize that what they are eating can have a detrimental effect on the way they look and feel.

Remember, good health is not hard, it just take a little change, observe the people who you think look fit and well and see what sort of things you think you may have to change in order to make yourself feel better.

Its all about Nutrition.***FACEBOOK-COMMENT***

I just saw this interesting story on 60 Minutes the other night about dangers of some conventional farming methods, and the effects related from direct exposure to the chemicals used as well as the in direct expose from consuming the fruits and vegetables from these farms.

Have a look and see what you think.

Poisoned

Australia's fruit and vegetables are sprayed with chemicals that are considered so dangerous they're banned around the world. Liz Hayes spent a hellish few weeks, witnessing the mutating effects of these poisons on people in other countries. And it's a horror show. Worst of all, the people who are supposed to be protecting us are pretending it's not happening.

It was once thought that only animal protein was complete and therefore a superior source to plant-based options. Complete protein is comprised of all ten essential amino acids. By definition, essential amino acids cannot be made by the body; they must be obtained through dietary sources. And, in fact, there are actually several complete plant protein sources. However, to obtain all amino acids in high quantities, its advantageous to consume several complementary sources of protein on a regular basis. For example, hemp, yellow pea and brown rice protein make up a superior amino acid profile that rivals any created in the animal kingdom.

Additionally, one of the big advantages of properly balanced whole food (plant-based protein over animal protein) is its slightly neutral pH. In contrast, highly processed foods are acid forming, as are animal based foods. Whey protein isolate, for example, is highly acid forming. Whey straight from the cow would be neutral and even slightly alkaline, but once the protein is isolated (no longer rendering it a whole food), it is then pasteurized. These two steps of processing lower its pH, making it more acid-forming. Meat, pork in particular is also highly acid forming.

Its advantageous to maintain a neutral pH. Eating too many acid-forming foods will promote inflammation, reduce immune function and cause calcium to be pulled from the bones in order to keep the blood in its neutral state of 7.35. This, of course, leads to lower bone density and, in many cases, osteoporosis.

The most alkaline forming foods are those with chlorophyll, the green pigment in many plants. Leafy greens for example. Hemp is an excellent example in that is contains complete protein, yet the fact that it is not isolated and that it contains chlorophyll helps maintain a more alkaline pH.

So, there you are: you can have your plant-based protein and eat it, too.

Here is a couple of videos of our trip to the snow in July 09. Heaps of fun and one of the best leg workouts you will ever get. I am the second one over the jump. My father show's that age is no real barrier to getting out and being active and having fun, he also show's how to have a good stack.

This one is my brother snow boarding and attempting to get some air.

My father again having a bit better luck standing this time. My other brother at the end fly's past in a hurry.
